CULTURAL FARM

kapūʻao

There is no Agriculture, without culute

Kapūʻaookaululāʻau is a concept to plant, care for and perpetuate the growth of our rainforest and meakanu ʻōiwi. Following this manaʻo Kapūʻao was decided as the name for our plant nursery. This manaʻo would guide us in growing meakanu to remind of how precious ʻĀina is, how much ʻĀina provides for all living things and how we must reciprocate the care and life into our ʻĀina.

Each meakanu has personality and when planting each play a role and has intention within the ʻohana that surrounds them. This manaʻo transmits into the kanaka community as we share more deeply about aloha ʻĀina and the kuleana to hoʻoulu hou i ka ululāʻau.

Kapūʻao serves as a brach of Kanu Ka ʻIke servicing everything Mahiʻai and meakanu related.

Māmaki, Pipturus albidus, Endemic

Mamaki may be used to help bring balance to our body cycles and wellbeing. In Hawaii tradition, lāʻau lapaʻau was firstly used as a preventative for overall health and healing. Other traditions shared that women ate māmaki fruits and seeds during the later months of pregnancy. The fruit was used in healing sores and wounds. Mothers gave the small white fruit to children as a mild laxative or to treat ʻea (thrush). Seeds were given to infants and adults as a tonic for general debility of the body.
